Transferring an existing domain

Transferring Domain Names

To transfer an existing domain name to our hosting plan, please read the information below:

If your domain ends with .com, .net or .org, your current registrar likely has your domain in a locked status. This means that your domain cannot be transferred until it is unlocked. In addition, domains with these extensions require an EPP key, also known as a Transfer Authorization Code. Without this, you will not be able to complete the transfer. When you ask us to transfer your domain name, you will be asked to confirm that your domain is eligible for transfer. You will also be asked to provide your EPP key. The EPP key will be used by you again later when you verify the transfer. Once we initiate the transfer, an email will be sent to the administrative email address on file for the domain. The verification email will instruct you to navigate to a web site in order to begin the verification process. The first page of the verification will ask for your domain name and a transfer key. Please note that this is NOT your EPP key. This is a key to enter the verification site and it is provided to you in the verification email. Once you have entered the verification site, you will be asked to confirm acceptance of the transfer, enter your EPP key (transfer authorization code provided by your current registrar) and enter a phone number. Then you will submit the verification. Your domain will complete transfer within 7 days of this verification.

.ca Domain Names

If you are a .ca domain holder, it works a little bit differently. Every .ca domain holder not only has their domain registered with a registrar, but also with CIRA (Canadian Internet Registration Authority – http://www.cira.ca). While these domains are never locked by a registrar or by CIRA, any transfer will need to be approved through CIRA. When we initiate the transfer of your .ca domain name, you will receive a CIRA confirmation email at the administrative email address for your domain. If you do not know what address is listed for your domain, please contact your current registrar. In addition, CIRA will send you your CIRA account login information. If you do not receive this by email, please go to https://registrants.cira.ca/password/forgot/en to retrieve it. Using this information, login to CIRA and approve the transfer of your domain by clicking ‘Approve Changes to Domain’ in red text at the top of the page. Once you have confirmed with CIRA, you will receive one more email indicating that the transfer has been completed. Please note that this only means CIRA has completed the transfer in their database. They must then send notification to our registrar. Once our registrar receives this, the transfer is in fact complete. The completion can take up to 7 days.
